The name “Tampines” is starting to become synonymous with Singapore’s east side as the neighbourhood sprawls larger with each passing year. As new malls and shopping areas spring up, Tampines has become the go-to place for those living in the east. But malls aren’t the only thing that you can visit in Tampines. There’s plenty to do in Tampines and more than enough to fill up a weekend!

Take a Hike Through a Hidden Quarry

MacRitchie Reservoir and Bukit Timah, popular spots for walking through nature, can be a little far for those staying in the east. But that’s because many people don’t know about the hidden nature spot in Tampines – The Tampines Quarry. Before being filled up by rainwater, this space used to be a sand quarry. Now, it looks more like a lake, surrounded by nature. It’s a great place for a walk, or bike, and a fantastic place for photos!

Take a Chill Stroll Along Tampines Eco Green

If a Quarry Hike and Bike sounds like a little too much for you, then Tampines Eco Green is a great alternative. This “no bike” park has open grasslands and freshwater wetlands, perfect for those who just want a little nature appreciation. The park also has specially built bird hides, specially built for bird watching enthusiasts to catch perching birds in close proximity.

Visit a 5-storey Library and a Laser Tag Arena, in one building

Tampines Regional Library used to be a stand-alone building until it got assimilated into the hulking behemoth we now know at Our Tampines Hub. Besides the library, Singapore’s largest community centre houses sports facilities like a sheltered track, swimming pools, multiple futsal fields and a soccer field. Amazingly, HomeTeamNS also runs a Laser Tag arena in the building. If you’re hungry, you can hit up the 800-seat Hawker Centre that is also in the same building.

Hit Up IKEA

IKEA trips don’t feel like furniture hunting trips. In fact, a lot of it is wandering around the beautifully set up showrooms and looking for great deals for kitchen and homeware. We also really love a good meal at their café, where you could get a serving of their popular chicken wings and Swedish meatballs. The store in Tampines is 70,000 square meters, with ample parking. If you’re not driving, a free shuttle bus runs to and from Tampines MRT daily.

End Your Day with A Tipple

Who knew that the neighbourhood bar concept would make its way into the heartlands? The Tipsy Penguin is Tampines’ answer to the modern bars that fill up the streets in central Singapore, with a modern menu full of great bar bites (Oysters from $2!), fantastic dishes and a full drinks menu. We’re talking gin, rum, whiskey, wines and signature cocktails to go with the food that customers invariably start to order.
